Tzilah bas Malkah said: the matriarchs established prayers
שרה תקנה תפלת שחרית שנאמר (בראשית יח: א-יב) כחם היום…ותצחק שרה ואין שחוק אלא רנה שנאמר (תהלים קכו:ב) אז ימלא שחוק פינו ולשוננו רנה. ואין רנה אלא תפלה שנאמר (ירמיהו ז:טז) ואל־תשא בעדם רנה ותפלה
Sarah established morning prayer, as it is stated: as the day grew hot….Sarah laughed. And there’s no “laughter” except “song”, as it is stated: when our mouths are filled with laughter and our lips with song. And there’s no “song” except “prayer”, as it is stated: and do not lift up song and prayer on their behalf
רבקה תקנה תפלת מנחה שנאמר (בראשית כה:כב) ותלך לדרש את־יהוה…וימלאו ימיה ואין דרש אלא חיות שנאמר (תהלים כב:כז) יהללו יהוה דרשיו יחי לבבכם לעד ואין חיות אלא תפלה שנאמר (תהלים מב:ט) תפלה לאל חיי
Rivkah established afternoon prayer, as it is stated: and [Rivkah] went to inquire of haShem…and her days were full. And there is no “inquiring” except “living”, as it is stated: let those who inquire of haShem praise him, your hearts will live forever. And there is no “living” except “prayer”, as it is stated: a prayer to the god of my life.
רחל תקנה תפלת ערבית שנאמר (בראשית לה:יח) ויהי בצאת נפשה כי מתה ותקרא שמו בן־אוני ואין קריות אלא תפלה שנאמר (ישעיהו נו:ז) כי ביתי בית־תפלה יקרא ויש אומרים אל תקרי אוני אלא עני ואין עני אלא תפלה שנאמר (תהלים קב:א) תפלה לעני
Rakhel established evening prayer, as it is stated: as her breath was leaving, because she was dying, she called his name child-of-my-suffering. And there is no “calling” except “prayer”, as it is stated: for my house will be called a house of prayer. And some say: do not read “אוני/my strength/suffering” but rather “עני/afflicted”. and there is no affliction except prayer, as it is written: prayer of the afflicted.
